Psychoacoustic Examination of Feasible Level of Additional Warning Sound for Quiet Vehicles
نویسندگان
چکیده
The reduced noise of electric and hybrid electric vehicles has been of particular concern because of the potential danger that these vehicles pose to pedestrians when their approach is inaudible against background noise. To address this issue, the use of additional warning sounds in such vehicles is being considered in various countries. The aim of this study was to examine the feasible level of the warning sounds in some urban environments. The levels of three candidate warning sounds (sound of car horn, engine sound, and band-pass noise) were adjusted by the study subjects against four types of urban background noise presented in a laboratory environment. The subjects were asked to adjust the level of the warning sounds so that they were reliably audible or just detectable. The results showed that the level of background noise and type of warning sound significantly affected the perception of the warning sounds, but there was no significant crosscultural difference between the German and Japanese subject groups. The observations showed that a warning sound that was reliably audible in a particular environment might be inaudible in another environment approximately 10 to 20 dB noisier. The results were also compared with current recommended levels of warning sounds for quiet vehicles.

Vehicles with electric or hybrid engines have the advantages of being more environmentally friendly and quieter than internal combustion engines. However, reduced engine noise can also lead to potentially dangerous situations for pedestrians when an oncoming vehicle is inaudible in a given background noise (e.g. Kerber and Fastl [1]). One possible solution to this problem is the use of warning ...

Electric and hybrid electric vehicles (EV/HEV) have the advantage of being more environmentally friendly and quieter than internal combustion engine vehicles. However, reduced noise can also lead to potentially dangerous situations for pedestrians when an oncoming vehicle is inaudible due to background noise (e.g. Kerber and Fastl, internoise 2007). Electric or hybrid electric vehicles (EVs/HEVs) have the advantages that they make lesser noise compared to conventional engine vehicles. This quietness is, however, a matter of concern for pedestrians because the sound of EVs/HEVs may be inaudible in urban backgrounds. Hence, the application of additional soundemitting device has been studied. Gathering wide range of acoustic knowledge on feas...

Introduction: Sound as a detrimental factor in working environments can create annoying conditions for people in addition to physical problems. Therefore, in addition to evaluating quantitative parameters such as pressure levels, it is absolutely necessary to study the quality parameters of the sound in the work environment. Material & Methods: In this descriptive-analytic research, the sound ...
